Abstrakt: A report from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control provides new data on opioids in the United States. In 2022, there were 81,806 opioid-involved overdose deaths, the highest number ever recorded. Medications like buprenorphine and methadone can significantly reduce overdose-related and overall mortality, but only a small percentage of people with opioid use disorder (OUD) receive these medications. The report highlights the need for expanded communication about the effectiveness of OUD medications and increased efforts to engage individuals with OUD in treatment that includes medications. Pharmacists and payors are encouraged to make these medications available without delays. [Extracted from the article]
