Introduction: Mobile phone addiction is a common 'pandemic' in the 21st century world population from children to adults especially among students or youngsters. There are a lot of negative health implications on the ability to socialise among the phone users' peers and family members. This was even more significant during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown where the mobile phone was one of the entertainment methods during the stay at home order. As for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), it is a well-documented disorder that is common among teenagers or young adults. There are no studies on their relationship. Aims and Objectives: To investigate and evaluate the association between mobile phone addiction and TMD amongst dental students in University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. This is a survey whereby all participants answered anonymously and voluntarily. The participants were asked to complete two validated questionnaires, which are Fonseca's questionnaire to diagnose TMD and Test of Mobile Phone Dependence questionnaire for evaluation of mobile phone addiction. The questionnaires were distributed among undergraduate clinical dental students in University Malaya, Malaysia who have being using smartphones for at least one year. Data was collected and tabulated. Pearson correlation coefficient test was used to analyse the data using SPSS version 25. Results: A total of 247 students (aged 20 to 25 years, 28.3 % male and 71.7 % female) completed the questionnaires. No significant correlation was found in between mobile phone addiction and temporomandibular disorders (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Mobile phone addiction appeared to not be a risk factor of temporomandibular disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
