Abstrakt: This article discusses the prospects and challenges of open-access publishing in academia. It highlights how paywalls hinder researchers from publishing their work and limit public access to scholarly materials, particularly affecting individuals without institutional support. The article presents two models of academic publishing: subscription-based and open access. It argues that the open-access model, which aims to democratize knowledge production and increase visibility and accessibility of research, is gaining traction as a more inclusive and equitable publishing practice. However, the article acknowledges the challenges of operational sustainability for open-access journals. The article concludes by introducing the content of the current issue of the Asia-Pacific Social Science Review, which includes various research articles on topics such as housing policy, ageism, interethnic relations, and social networks. The editor expresses gratitude to the editors and reviewers and invites submissions for future issues. [Extracted from the article]
