Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly targets proteins in the surface layers of the skin and oral mucosa, resulting in the formation of painful blisters. A 41-year-old male, who had been diagnosed with PV in 2018 at a reference hospital and was undergoing treatment with azathioprine, underwent a biopsy of an ulcerated lesion on the lower lip in 2022. The histopathological report confirmed the presence of active PV. Subsequently, he was referred to the dental service for further evaluation. Upon physical examination, several issues were observed, including poor dental health, ulcerated lesions in distinct areas, gingival erythema, the presence of tongue coating, and lower lip bleeding upon touch due to dryness. The oral lesions were addressed by prescribing clobetasol propionate in topical solution and 0.05% cream, as well as lip sunscreen. This treatment was combined with oral hygiene instructions and dental care, ultimately leading to an improvement in the patient's quality of life. This case report highlights the importance of dentists having a comprehensive understanding of PV to provide appropriate management and care for patients with this condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
