An 82-year-old female patient presented with an asymptomatic verrucous leukoplakia on the left lateral border of her tongue, measuring 3 cm in its largest diameter, with an unspecified duration. No identifiable risk factors were noted. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the anatomopathological report indicated a nonspecific chronic inflammatory process, ruling out malignancy. The clinical diagnosis was proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL). Subsequently, the patient underwent a total resection of the lesion under general anesthesia, with the previous anatomopathological diagnosis confirmed. Over the course of a 2-year postoperative follow-up, the patient experienced a recurrence of the lesion. A new incisional biopsy was conducted, followed by resection under general anesthesia. This time, the report indicated squamous papilloma, again excluding malignancy. The patient has been under clinical observation for 2 years without any signs of recurrence. This case underscores the critical importance of ongoing clinical monitoring for patients with PVL, as recurrences are common prior to potential malignant transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
