A recent study conducted at Murdoch University has found that the Western flower thrips, a species of thrips that can cause significant damage to crops, is regulated as a quarantine organism in the European Union. These thrips can feed on plants and transmit viruses that cause plant diseases. The study suggests that fumigation with ethyl formate mixed with CO2 is an effective treatment for controlling the thrips, with no adverse effects on the flowers or their shelf lives. This treatment could serve as an alternative to methyl bromide, which is being phased out due to its phytotoxicity. [Extracted from the article] |
