Abstrakt: The article focuses on issues related to the participation of the Irish Lesbian and Gay Organization (ILGO) in New York City's Saint Patrick's Day Parade. When Mayor David Dinkins arrived on Fifth Avenue to march with his lesbian and gay constituents at the parade, the emotional embraces he exchanged with the members of the ILGO, told a story of hard-won victory. Later, after Dinkins had ascended the steps of Saint Patrick's Cathedral for the traditional salutation with the cardinal John O'Connor, the cardinal's icy stare and cool handshake betrayed another story — one of undeniable defeat.
