Abstrakt: This article discusses the issue of substance use among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youth in rural communities in Hawai'i. NHPI youth have disproportionately high rates of substance use and substance use disorder, and rural Hawaiian youth are particularly at risk due to elevated rates of use and exposure to high-risk social environments. The article emphasizes the importance of identifying risk and protective factors for youth and implementing prevention efforts. The study mentioned in the article, titled "Parental Influences in Youths' Tobacco and Drug Use Resistance in Rural Hawai'i," aims to examine familial factors that contribute to substance use resistance and develop culturally grounded, family-based substance use prevention curricula. The study utilizes a community-based participatory research approach and involves interviews with parents and a Citizens' Panel to rank parent priority areas. The goal is to reduce health disparities and develop effective prevention practices for NHPI youth. [Extracted from the article]
