Abstrakt: | Background: Day surgery services, which makes up 70% of elective surgery, is quality assured and tailored regarding safety and efficiency at the hospital, while the post-operative phase at home is the patient and relatives' responsibility. Aim: The purpose is increased insight and knowledge about how day-surgery patients prepare before the operation, and how this affects the time at home afterwards. Methods: Thematic analysis of the data material, which includes 78 oral interviews within 5 surgical domains. Theoretical perspective: Findings and interpretation are seen in the context of Florence Nightingale's basic nursing principles and relevant up-to-date research. The results show three main themes: I did what they told me to do; I had no ability to imagine the time afterwards; I had regrets afterwards. Conclusion: Day-surgery patients fail to understand how they can prevent complications and optimize their own situation. Lack of preparation leads to additional suffering and a number of practical problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
