This article reports that during recent years the production of early grass has taken a prominent part in grassland husbandry. In the past, farmers have depended on Irish Italian ryegrass for very early spring grass but new introductions such as New Zealand Short Rotation ryegrass (H.I.) and still more recently, S.22 Italian ryegrass from the Welsh Plant Breeding Station have been placed on the market. The study conducted indicates that under rotational grazing where liberal fertilizers are applied, S.22 persists in full production into the third harvest year. This is also true when the sward is subjected to regular cutting with heavy applications of fertilizers; four years after sowing, S.22 is as dense and as productive as H.I. and superior to Irish Italian ryegrass. |
