Abstrakt: This article reports that the value of herbage measurement in pasture work depends on two conditions. One, the measurements must be convertible, within reason, to feeding values; and two, they must be sufficiently precise and valid. By precision is implied adequate sampling, and by validity, freedom from bias at least from unmeasured bias. If these conditions can be fulfilled, more general use of clipping techniques can be made after all they do constitute a fairly convenient means of comparing pasture types and treatments. It still remains to check up on their practical value as quantitative and qualitative tests. A professor compared herbage and animal data from a number of sources. He pointed out the lack of correlation between the two sets of estimates. In the majority of cases clipping gives the higher estimate, often up to 25 per cent in excess of the grazing estimate but there are plenty of cases where the reverse is true.
