This article discusses the ethical considerations of using generative AI tools and processes in K-12 education. It provides generic ways to use AI tools ethically, such as citing and attributing AI as an information source and explicitly stating how AI was used. It also highlights questionable ethical issues, including not citing AI as a source, taking credit for AI-generated content, and reading AI-generated text in oral assessments. The article suggests ways to counteract unethical AI use, such as providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning and comparing their work in class to their homework efforts. It also offers recommendations for teachers, such as frontloading course design with AI ethical issues, creating ethical standards, and integrating awareness and education about AI in the curriculum. The article emphasizes the importance of considering students' linguistic ability, learning objectives, and stage of learning when using generative AI.
