The Encuentro processes, initiated in 1971, offer a lens to understand the growth of Hispanic/Latino presence and ministry in the United States. The Encuentros constitute the officially sanctioned vision for being church and proceeding in the pastoral care of U.S. Hispanic/Latinos. Their methodology derives from the creative reception of the spirit of Vatican II in Latin America. Many of the main features of the ecclesiology and pastoral care developed in Latin America have been adapted and replicated in U.S. Hispanic/Latino contexts. This article explores features of this symbiotic and synergistic relationship with the Latin American Church as correlated to the historical development of U.S. Hispanic/Latino Catholicism and Pope Francis's monumental reform efforts, especially the implementation of the synodal pathway.
