This article discusses the challenges and future perspectives of managing organic contaminants in potable reuse systems up to the year 2050. The authors highlight the need for improved removal and degradation of organic contaminants, as well as the disposal of reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) in inland systems. They also discuss the potential increase in regulatory and treatment concerns for organic contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), taste and odor compounds, microbial byproducts, and plastics. The article emphasizes the importance of developing new technologies and treatment processes to address emerging contaminants and improve the efficiency of water reuse systems.
