The article discusses the co-opting of cowboy poetry and the efforts of one man, Justin Reichert, to reverse this trend. Reichert, a former cowboy, was initially inspired by the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, but upon his return years later, he found that the event had changed and lost its original spirit. In response, Reichert started the Outside Circle, a show aimed at recapturing the gathering's original raucous and organic atmosphere. The Outside Circle also addresses important topics such as mental health and addiction, which are often overlooked in the cowboy culture. However, as the Outside Circle grows in popularity, there are concerns about maintaining its authenticity and inclusivity. [Extracted from the article] |
