Javier Milei, a self-described "anarcho-capitalist," became the president of Argentina in December 2023 and has implemented an ambitious neoliberal restructuring program to address the country's inflation crisis. Milei has faced opposition in Congress, leading him to adopt a strategy of "turbo-politics" to bypass legislative processes. This approach, known as "neoliberal parliamentarism," involves subverting or reforming legislative institutions to facilitate neoliberal reforms that lack popular support. Milei has issued an Emergency Decree and an Omnibus Bill to implement his reforms, which include privatization, economic deregulation, and labor reforms. However, opposition politicians have made changes to the bill, limiting the President's emergency powers and retaining some state-owned companies. Milei's approach reflects a broader trend of using populist rhetoric to rationalize the subversion of democracy in far-right governments. This erosion of democratic standards is a concern as neoliberal governments prioritize market forces over democratic institutions. [Extracted from the article] |
