Abstrakt: | This article focuses on a study related to serum protein-bound iodine (PBI) and electroencephalography (EEG) as diagnostic aids in cretinism. PBI levels were determined in 100 mentally subnormal subjects resident in a Finnish institution. EEG recordings of 69 of these were obtained. Results did not reveal any undiagnosed patients with hypothyroidism. Thyroid was administered to 19 subjects with PBI levels of less than 4μg percent as a therapeutic test. No changes in PBI levels or EEG recordings were produced, nor were any mental changes observed. |
