This article reports on findings of a cytogenic survey of 504 mentally retarded resident children of the South Carolina State Mental Retardation centres over a period of two and a half years during June 1971 to 1974. The survey, reportedly, was conducted with the goal of prevention of recurrence of mental retardation in the siblings of institutionalized children. The children were selected from a lower age group with the primary objective of the detection of parents who would still be within the reproductive age range and who could be carriers of chromosome aberrations. Six categories of chromosome aberration were found in institutionalized mentally retarded persons in South Carolina. Of the 504 studied, 112 had a chromosome aberration. Specific chromosome aberrations were clinically suspected in 98 persons; 89 of them had Down's Syndrome, 2 had Cri-du-chat Syndrome, 2 had Turner's Syndrome, 3 were hermaphrodites, and two had Pseudoklinefelter's Syndrome. |
