This article discusses the changing landscape of academic freedom in the United States, where self-censorship among professors and bans on certain concepts and books have become prevalent. These restrictions have limited the study of topics such as structural racism and intersectionality. The article explores the opposition between proponents of gag laws and defenders of critical race theory, framing it as a battle between faith-based scholarship and critical thinking. It emphasizes the importance of academic freedom in maintaining an informed and democratic society. The article concludes by introducing a collection of articles that examine the impact of attacks on academic freedom and the interplay between different forms of social power. These articles highlight the challenges to academic freedom in higher education institutions, particularly in relation to topics such as critical race theory and diversity, equity, and inclusion. They discuss the role of faculty unions in safeguarding academic freedom and the need for collaboration between faculty and administrators to protect it.
