The article presents the views of parents about parenting and teaching of their children. It is generally agreed that practical advice and some training in teaching their child should form part of any programme of support offered to the family of a young mentally handicapped child. Cultural factors appear to be an influence; some parents may not share the assumptions upon which parent involvement programmes are based. Thus, parents have a variety of ideas about teaching, reflected in their style of interaction with the child. The author concludes that some parents, and particularly some mothers, will be 'on the same wavelength' as a professional worker offering a home-teaching intervention. |
