The article discusses acquisition of social skills by mentally retarded adult training assistants. Social inadequacies are defining characteristics of mental retardation and have been shown to be important for successful community adjustment. Furthermore, treating these social deficits is becoming increasingly important given the widespread application of the Scandinavian principal of normalisation which has resulted in the placement of more mentally retarded persons in community versus isolated institutional settings. However, despite the need for treatment techniques to deal with this problem, little research describing procedures to train mentally retarded persons with social skills deficits has appeared. |
