"Chronicling Westerners in Nineteenth-Century East Asia: Lives, Linkages, and Imperial Connections" is a collection of essays edited by Robert S. G. Fletcher and Robert Hellyer. The book focuses on the careers of Europeans who worked in the international system of treaty ports in East Asia during the 19th century. The essays provide both micro- and macro-level perspectives on these ports and their connections to the larger world of empire. While the book primarily focuses on British men and events from the 1830s to the 1870s, it offers valuable insights into the transnational networks and connections formed by individuals in this time period. The book also explores tensions between treaty-port communities and the racial divisions that westerners cultivated in their imperial ideologies. Overall, "Chronicling Westerners" contributes to our understanding of the globalizing world of commerce, the treaty-port system, and modern empire. [Extracted from the article] |
