Abstrakt: Alpine Archaeological Consultants, Inc. was hired by the Chipeta Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society to reassess the Escalante Game Drive site as part of a State Historical Fund site assessment grant. Alpine was to locate and record drive line features or site elements with sub-meter locational information, assess the degree of site degradation since the last site recordation, create a geospatial model of the site, and recover samples that could refi ne temporal use of the site. The results of the reassessment suggest that the site remains relatively intact. Radiocarbon samples provide strong evidence for use of the site by Ute populations. Ethnographic information suggests that the features could have been used to hunt deer, sheep, or antelope. The geospatial model indicates that most of the features were likely used for casual animal procurement along normal travel corridors between the Gunnison River and the Dominguez Rim. Features that are not along expected travel corridors are clustered in the southwestern portion of the site and may represent an area where animals were driven into a trap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
