Abstrakt: In the World Wars of the twentieth century the Indian Ocean was threatened by commerce raiders and a hostile fleet sortie in 1942. From the outset the East India Company (EIC) was intimately connected to the English/British state, charged with supplying high quality Indian saltpetre, a vital strategic resource. After the EIC was abolished the Royal Navy assumed local roles, but quickly realized the economic advantage of a dedicated "Indian" Navy. [Extracted from the article]
