It is a thorough, nuanced and balanced investigation of Philip II of Spain's unsuccessful attempt to invade England in 1588 which aims to cut through the myths and legends that have built up around the Spanish Armada to reach a more comprehensive understanding of it as a military and naval campaign. Moreover, a counterfactual assessment of what could have been had the Spanish Armada managed the landing of its and Parma's troops on the Kentish coast is also included and posits the real possibility that the long-term outcomes could have been relatively similar. This new edition, "fully revised and substantially expanded", is over double the size of its precursor, I The Spanish Armada i (1988, revised 1998), and all the better for it despite the original already being a masterly work.
