Abstrakt: In 2022 we commemorate 125 years from the birth and 95 years from the death of Ivan Milev. On this occasion we focus on the documentary heritage of one of the most remarkable Bulgarian artists, which is preserved at the Bulgarian Central State Archives under Archival Fonds 89K. The fonds comprises of sixteen documents arranged in ten archival units, which are published for the first time in full and unabridged. They cover the period from May 1923 to January 1927 and refer to important events from the life of Ivan Milev, such as his experience with classic and modern European art in Italy, his appointment as an artist at the National Theatre, romantic pursuits, etc. The expressed impressions, hopes, grievances and intentions enrich our perception of the artist. The article also provides a brief biography of the life of Ivan Milev, with more details on his trip to Italy in 1923, together with Prof. Nikola Ganushev and fellow students from the State Academy of Arts, provided in the memoires of the painter Asen Vasiliev.
