The article reports that the magneto-optic (Faraday) effect has enabled development of equipment used in diverse modern applications, such as industrial lasers and fiber-optic telecommunications. The principle of operation of optical isolators and circulators is described herein, as well as descriptions of critical components in such equipment, such as the polarizers and the magnets. In 1845, Michael Faraday discovered that the plane of polarized light rotates while passing through glass contained in a magnetic field. |
