Abstrakt: This article reviews the historical development of case management and social work, discusses definitions and models of case management, highlights similarities and differences between generalist social work and case management, and suggests how social work education might better link to current case management. The article is concerned with how the baccalaureate social work curriculum can best prepare students to be successful in today's job market. There is much overlap between traditional social work and case management as practiced today. The author suggests that case management has emerged as an organizational strategy, and that the structure of case management services grows out of the circumstances faced by the particular agency, resulting in a variety of models of case management. This movement was born out of a concern to manage care, control costs, and to coordinate existing services rather than create new ones. As a delivery system strategy, this movement does not give preference to hiring professionals with specific degrees, such as social work.
