Abstrakt: The article reconstructs, on the basis of documents kept in the Jesuit Father Pietro Tacchi Venturi’s archive, the attitude of the Holy See facing the measures of national assimilation adopted by the fascist government in the 1920s towards the linguistic minorities of Trentino and Alto Adige and of Venezia Giulia, in particular the answers given to the efforts to make the clergy (secular and regular) and religious practice the means to spread the Italic-fascist values in the redeemed lands. The present work aims to be a contribution to the subject concerning the relationship between Catholicism and nationalism in the twentieth century, but at the same time it is also the attempt to start a critical reflection, detached from strained interpretations, on Tacchi Venturi’s role as the unofficial intermediary between the Holy See and fascism since 1923. Tacchi Venturi was the spokesman of the supranational mission of the Catholic Church, to be pursued, however, with respect for the constituted authority and for its rightful aspiration to the national unity.
