| Abstrakt: | This article presents a biography of author Matthew Gregory "Monk" Lewis. In 1792 he travelled to Weimar to study German. Critics have reasoned that the author of so shocking a work as "The Monk" must himself be a devil, or the author of so enlightened a work as the "Journal of a West India Proprietor, Kept During a Residence in the Island of Jamaica" must be a saint. Among the best of short treatments is found in Devendra P. Varma's "The Gothic Flame." |
