This article presents a biography of author Sheridan Le Fanu. He was born on August 28, 1814 in Dublin, Ireland to a Huguenot family. In 1839 he was called to the Irish bar but he never practiced law. In 1861 he became proprietor and editor of the "Dublin University" magazine. Unlike the several introductions and chapters that relate the facts of LeFanu's life, W. J. McCormack's biography examines the author and his works in the context of nineteenth-century Anglo-Irish society. "Joseph Sheridan LeFanu," by Michael H. Begnal presents three essays which examine the author in relation to the gothic tradition and then focus on his achievement in particular novels. |
