The article presents a research guide on the biography and works of author and dramatist Alexander Sumarokov. He was born in Finland into one of the foremost Muscovite families of ancient nobility which was, nevertheless, not particularly wealthy. Although there are no books available in English which concern themselves exclusively with the biography of Sumarokov, there are a number of general works which have significant segments allocated to Sumarokov's life and works. Sumarokov neither wrote a diary nor memoirs. Very little other than a rather limited record of correspondence is available to the researcher and that only in Russian. Sumarokov exposes his personality virtually exclusively in his own works and in his recorded relations with his contemporaries. |
