This article presents information on growing population of Hispanic Americans in the U.S. In 1970 the estimated 9.6 million Hispanic Americans made up 4.7% if the population, By 2020 the rapidly growing Hispanic population was expected to have expanded more than 6 times, to 59.8 million, or 17.8%, a sizable minority. In 1930, after an upsurge in immigration from Mexico, the Census Bureau began counting "Mexicans" as a distinct category. In 1980, census takers began asking whether Americans were of "Spanish Hispanic origin." Statistics collected by the U.S. government treat race and Hispanic origin as separate concepts. |
