Interviewing multiple members of a family can be a challenging task One tool which researchers may find helpful in guiding such interviews is the genogram. In a study focused on the intergenerational transfer of family farms or ranches, from three to eight family members were interviewed in 27 families. Participants completed a simple genogram form prior to the interview. Researchers then used the genogram and a semi- structured interview guide to assist with the interview process. The geno gram assures that all selected family members are included, and helps in establishing informal relationships with research participants. In addition, the genogram can be used to check the accuracy of the data about the family make-up and serve as a reminder to ask key questions. It is suggested that the genogram be used early in the data gathering process and that self-administered genograms be kept relatively simple. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
