Abstrakt: This article focuses on Hispanic Americans who excelled in sports mostly associated with the U.S. Many great Latino athletes have played U.S. sports. Nancy Lopez, for example, of Mexican descent, was one of a rare few women golfers who became a household name. The one sport, however, that has produced the most Latino American professional athletes has been baseball. For many years, Latinos were typically not accepted in the major leagues. Hispanic Americans with light skin and great talent, such as Cuban-born Lefty Gomez (a pitcher in the 1930s), were the exceptions. INSET: Gold Glove Awards.
