This article presents a historical background on the development and promotion of Todd-AO system by innovator Mike Todd. The completed Todd-AO system offered the wraparound feeling of Cinerama, but with less expensive equipment and with better picture and sound quality. It was designed to help filmmakers tell sweeping, theatrical stories in which viewers felt like part of the action. When it was introduced in 1955 with the film version of the Broadway musical Oklahoma!, Todd-AO became an instant sensation. The wide screen was a perfect medium for big musical production numbers set against acres of corn. The uniqueness of the film was matched by its presentation. Mike Todd insisted that Todd-AO movies would be referred to as shows to emphasize that they were unique attractions. |
