In this article, the author discusses the overlap of language and business communication (BC) as he argues for their separation--an issue seemingly slighted by the profession. Pure English pedagogy deals with linguistic mechanics--punctuation, morphology, syntax, spelling, and diction; and style deals with succinctness, directness, and clarity; but communication discusses in a more holistic and content-oriented manner the many aspects of the movement of a message from one person to one or more others. Grammar books don't go into BC but business writing books straddle the two areas. |
