Director/Adaptor Erica Schmidt aroused feelings of discomfort in audiences for her production of Mac Beth, performed by a cast, who were all 17 to 23 years old women. The productions raised invaluable questions about society’s acceptance of violence when perpetuated by men and, alternatively, a response of shock when they witnessed it enacted by young, female bodies. Schmidt relied on the alienation effect – as she had performers who appeared to be schoolgirls stage one of the most violent plays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
