Abstrakt: This article presents the text of a speech by Isa Hofmann, Director of the Textile Division of Avantex, at the 2003 Annual Conference of the International Textile Machinery Federation in Dresden, Germany. Intelligent textiles are classified in various systems and one of them is adaptive systems. As their name suggests, this system adapts independently to changing conditions of the body and environment. They react to changes in heat, light and moisture. A visionary example is variable heat insulation, for example a pullover or jacket that adapts independently to changes in the environmental temperature. Meanwhile, Seacell is a new cellulose fibre incorporating active ingredients from algae manufactured by the German company Zimmer AG. The demand for health-promoting fibres will increase in the future. Seacell has antibiotic properties thanks to the metal ions incorporated. SwissShield fabric by the Swiss manufacturer of the same name has protective effects. So far, the major areas of application have been in the weapons technology sector and telecommunications to protect munitions and rockets, and also in the area of protective clothing for people working on radio installations. Its use in clothing was shown for the first time at the Avantex as part of a sample collection.
