The authors details how unity helped the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of Rhode Island (URI) strengthen its position in negotiations with upper administration and protect smaller language programs. Colleagues at URI united around a proficiency initiative that centered the assessment of both language proficiency and intercultural communicative competence. The initiative also supported students' career readiness. |
