Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution can be divided into two categories, wihch are balanced constitution and unbalanced constitution. Balanced constitution represents the healthy physical and mental state of the individual; while unbalanced constitution represents the state of the individual being unhealthy or even diseased. The unbalanced constitution can be further divided into eight types. Some particular unbalanced constitutions are related to some specific diseases and will affect the occurrence, consequence, and prognosis of diseases. Therefore, for older people with cognitive impairment, nursing care based on constitutional identification could effectively achieve the purpose of disease prevention. In Macao, older people with unbalanced constitution, yin deficiency accounts for the highest proportion. Cognitive impairment among older people is not only affected by age, education, regular exercise, and depression, but is also related to yin deficiency and qi depression. These two types of constitutions mainly affect the language and visuoconstruction of cognitive ability. According to the results of constitution identification, formulating TCM nursing principles of engendering fluid by nourishing yin, and relieving depression by the soothing liver, may improve the cognitive ability of older people and prevent the deterioration of the disease.
