Katherine Boivin's new monograph takes this significant retable as its point of departure to reassess the interaction between religious institutions, city governance and local identity in the later Middle Ages. Boivin compellingly analyses the system of about nine Riemenschneider altarpieces installed between 1485 and 1514; both local and expansive in their meaning, these altarpieces can be conceived of as "tools of urban planning" (p. 130). Boivin revises longstanding scholarship on Riemenschneider by situating his altarpieces in their settings and demonstrating how architectural and urban context is essential to their analysis.
