Abstrakt: There are serious concerns about the status ofthe agricultural sector and its regional variations in Bihar. Agriculture on which still more than two-thirds of the population depends as a source of livelihood, has remained as the most excluded and lagging sector after independence. Over a period of time the status of agriculture has deteriorated and acquired regional nature with features. magnitude and complexities varying across regions within a particular state. Decreasing performance of agriculture along with regional variations create a huge problem for the state. It is very important for us to understand and measure the status of agriculture at district level and regional level as well and then explore its regional variations. The main objective of this paper is to analyze inter-regional variation and dimensions of status of agriculture in the four agro-climate regions of Bihar and explain how the status of agriculture differs across regions. In order to explain the regional variation in the status of agriculture, a set o f indicators has been chosen. normalized them and computed composite index of status of agriculture at district and regional level and cluster analysis has been done at district level. The paper explains that there are significant differences that exist at the regional level as well as district level and thus no comprehensive generalization about the status and performance of agriculture can be drawn for the whole of Bihar. Northern East (Zone II) region is in a comparatively better position followed by the Southern West (Zone-III B) region, whereas a low level of status of agriculture is prevailing in the Southern East (Zone-III A) region. The cluster analysis also explains that even within a specific region a significant difference exists among districts and districts of one region lie close to districts of other regions.
