Over five million incidents of intimate partner violence (IPV) occur in the United States each year. More attention has been paid to intimate partner violence in recent decades, increasing the number of prevention and intervention campaigns. However, there exists a substantial disconnect in campaigns designed for the prevention and intervention of IPV and the effects of those campaigns on their target audience: victims of the violence. One promising approach for designing prevention interventions and health promotion campaigns is to ground prevention messaging in the stories of the target population. This study examines survivors' reactions to current campaign advertisements and seeks to understand how survivors' lived experiences can help shape future intervention and prevention efforts. Focus group interviews provide insight into the diverse lived experiences of intimate partner violence survivors, and have implications for women, social science research, educators, advocates, and the general public.
