This work examines the dynamics of the relationship between state repression and collective popular action through time. The project focuses on how difference in magnitude and form of repression affect the incidence of different magnitudes and forms of collective actions, and how these relationships could be affected by time. In order to do so, a dynamic theoretical approach to the study of collective action and repression is proposed. Time and spatial decay functions and their effects on the relationship are explored, as well as short and long term effects of repression over violence. Event history analysis is used as a method to test the dynamic continuous-time models specified to allow for the time dependence of the hazard rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
