Abstrakt: Several of the classical thinkers in sociology depicted the cultural program of modernity as one in which instrumental rationality and the process of increased rationalization infiltrated human relations and social organization. Inherent in their concern was that increased rationalization implied a subordination of value rational orientation, and that this process further diminished the importance of collective identity and shared values as bases for social identification. In this paper I examine the relationship between religious fundamentalism and modernity, and inherent in this effort is the examination of the question of the resurgence of religion in modern society and its ties to fundamentalist movements. Contemporary critics have dealt with these issues by alerting us to the resurgence of religion, and the emphasis placed on value rationalization in contemporary society. In this paper I compare and contrast Riesebrodt?s and Eisenstadt?s depictions of religious fundamentalist movements as they relate to the traditional conceptions of the trajectories inherent in the cultural program of modernity. I compare and contrast them according to four essential questions: what are the main conditions that have lead up to the rise of religious fundamentalist movements? How do Riesebrodt and Eisenstadt conceptualize fundamentalist movements? Do fundamentalist movements represent an inherently modern phenomenon? How do fundamentalist movements and the resurgence of religion challenge our conception of modernity? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
