Abstrakt: Do female drivers report being ticketed less often than male drivers? Do citizens report that African-American police officers are more likely to write a traffic ticket in the wake of a traffic stop than white officers? Are African-American and Hispanic drivers as compared to white drivers more likely to self-report receiving a traffic ticket? What of the effects of the intersections of officer race and ethnicity and driver race and ethnicity, such as a white police officer and an African-American driver? The present research uses citizen self-reports of traffic tickets to answer these questions. Net of additional explanatory measures including the legal reason for the traffic stop and other extralegal driver characteristics such as social class and age, the citizen self-report data indicate that driver gender, officer race and ethnicity, driver race and ethnicity, and intersections of officer race and ethnicity with driver race and ethnicity all affect traffic tickets by police.
