Research involving psychological contracts has generally viewed the psychological contract as an explanatory variable rather than an outcome, resulting in a gap in understanding how the psychological contract develops and varies. This paper develops a sophisticated theoretical understanding of psychological contract types that moves beyond the transactional-relational dichotomy to produce a dual scale measure of psychological contract type that simultaneously and independently considers the varying amounts of both relational and transactional elements. Data from the 1997 Harris Workforce Survey is used to formulate a refined measure of the psychological contract that allows for greater application of this concept in the general population.
