Abstrakt: Social Psychology has undergone many transitions in its view of the self and the self's development. The source of these views is Mead's theory of how the self is socialized into society. As influential as the Meadian development of self is for social psychology it remains primarily a cognitive process of taking the role of the other. In this paper we explore Mead's concept of role-taking through an ethnographic study of children's playground interactions. Through a combination of Mead's theory of self and Corsaro's methods of children's peer groups we explore how children assist each other in role-taking as well as how role-taking is a tool for cultural development. We discuss two sites of interactive role-taking and the overlapping mechanisms of role-taking involved at these sites. Our project adds an interactive element to Mead and simultaneously expands the concept of role-taking within the field of socialization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
