Burkitt's lymphoma is a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of undifferentiated B cells and has a highly aggressive character. This study presents a case of Burkitt's lymphoma in a pediatric patient. A 5-year-old male child was referred with a swelling causing facial asymmetry with a 1-month evolution time. On panoramic radiograph, a radiolucent lesion with ill-defined borders causing root resorption was observed. An incisional biopsy was performed and evidenced a dense infiltrate of monotonous appearing darkly stained round cells. The tumor cells were homogenous in size and shape with round to oval intensely basophilic nuclei and minimal cytoplasm. An immunohistochemistry study was performed and showed positivity for CD10, CD20, Transmission disequilibrium test (TDT), in situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr encoded RNA (EBER), and high Ki-67. The patient was referred to the oncology department and was lost to follow-up after 1 month. Burkitt's lymphoma presents an aggressive behavior, and early diagnosis is important to improve the prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
